25 years ago: KU fraternity ordered to discontinue traditional annual party

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 22, 1990:

The Phi Delta Theta fraternity at Kansas University was instructed today to halt its annual Southern Mess party after administrators deemed it inappropriate because of sexual and racial references printed in the party program. Programs from the 1989 and 1990 parties had been sent anonymously to several university administrators, including Chancellor Gene Budig and Executive Vice Chancellor Judith Ramaley, as well as to the Journal-World. The programs contained obscenities and sexual and racial references. Margaret Miller, KU assistant director of organizations and activities and coordinator for Greek programs, said the party would not be allowed again and that the fraternity’s social themes were to be approved in the future.
