25 years ago: Convenience store robbed twice in one Saturday

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 21, 1990:

  • In what might have been a Lawrence first, a local convenience store was the target of armed robbers twice in one day this week. Lawrence police reported that the Coastal Mart convenience store, 2330 Iowa, had been robbed at 3:16 a.m. on Saturday, and then again at 5:41 p.m. the same day. An undisclosed amount had been taken in the robberies, which were believed to have been unrelated. Police Lt. Mark Brothers, a Lawrence police officer for 18 years, said he had never heard of one business being robbed twice in one day.
  • Lawrence City Manager Mike Wildgen said he had received more than 70 applications for the post of assistant city manager. The deadline had just passed for the position, which Wildgen had held for 15 years before becoming city manager.
