DUI check lane yields three arrests, multiple citations

A DUI check lane Friday night resulted in three arrests and multiple citations, Lawrence Police Department spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said Monday.

Lawrence police conducted 14 field sobriety tests this weekend as part of a special DUI check lane between 10 p.m. Friday and 2 a.m. Saturday, McKinley said. During the enforcement event, officers arrested three people on suspicion of drunken driving.

McKinley said officers also issued citations for the following alleged incidents:

  • Six citations for transporting an open container of alcohol
  • Two citations for minor in possession of alcohol
  • One drug violation citation
  • Two citations for driving with a suspended license
  • Three citations for driving without insurance

DUI check lanes focus on identifying impaired drivers before they are involved in accidents. Based on data from across the state, Kansas sees an average of nearly 150 fatal accidents involving impaired drivers each year, McKinley said in a statement last week.
