Kansas’ Conley wins long jump

? Kansas University junior Sydney Conley claimed the first conference title of her career when she won the long jump at the Big 12 Championships on Saturday.

Conley jumped 6.48 meters (21 feet, 3 1/4 inches) to win.

The KU women remained in third place in the team race, while the men dropped to fifth.

Conley’s teammate Lindsay Vollmer took fifth in the long jump at 5.98 meters (19-7 1/2).

Other KU highlights:

• High jumper Nick Giancana placed fourth at 2.21 meters (7-3) and Austin Hoag was eight at 2.11 (6-11);

• Anastasiya Muchkayev took fourth in the shot put (16.10 meters, or 52-10);

• and Talia Marquez finished seventh in heptahlon with 4,807 points.

Saturday was prelim day on the track. KU had six of seven women’s entries and four of six men qualify for event finals, including top qualifiers Josh Munsch in the 1,500 and Michael Stigler in the 400 hurdles.

Texas Tech leads the women’s standings with 50 points and is followed by Kansas State (48) and Kansas (44.5).

On the men’s side, Texas leads with 71 points and is followed by Texas Tech (50.75), Oklahoma (49), Kansas State (43) and Kansas (33.25).
