Free State to host baseball regional

Free State High’s baseball team has to win two home games next week to earn a trip to the Class 6A state tournament.

The top-seeded Firebirds (16-4, ranked No. 2 in Class 6A) will face eighth-seeded Olathe North (7-13) at 4 p.m. Tuesday at FSHS. The Firebirds won their regular season matchup against the Eagles, 7-5 in eight innings, last week. If they win again, they’ll face the winner of Olathe Northwest (10-10) and Manhattan (9-9) at 6 p.m. in the regional championship.

Lawrence High’s baseball team (7-13, No. 7 seed) will travel to Topeka’s Hummer Sports Park on Thursday to face second-seeded Washburn Rural (13-5) at 4 p.m. The winner will face Junction City (10-10) or Topeka (7-13) at 6 p.m.

Softball

Free State’s softball team earned a No. 4 seed with a 12-8 record and will play at the CBAC complex in Olathe on Tuesday. The Firebirds will face No. 5 seed Topeka (11-9) at 4:45 p.m. With a victory, the Firebirds would play Olathe Northwest (18-2) or Junction City (7-13) in the regional finals.

The Lions (11-9) are the No. 6 seed and will face third-seeded Washburn Rural (14-6) at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday at the ODAC complex in Olathe. An LHS victory would put the Lions in the regional championship later that evening against Olathe North (16-4) or Manhattan (10-10).

Girls soccer

Lawrence High’s girls soccer team (4-12) was seeded 14th and will go on the road to play third-seeded Shawnee Mission West (11-4-1) at 6 p.m. Monday at the SMAC complex in Overland Park.

The Firebirds are the No. 11 seed with a 6-9 record and will face Shawnee Mission East (9-7) at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the SMAC complex.
