100 years ago: Two men carry out magazine-selling scam in Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 15, 1915:

  • “What appears to be another fraud in Lawrence took place a few weeks ago when two men who claimed to be graduates of Westport solicited subscriptions for standard magazines at greatly reduced rates in order to secure a scholarship to Yale, and since that time not a word has been heard from them or any magazines received. One of the men went by the name of Belmont while the name of the other is not known. They claimed to be representing a magazine agency in Minneapolis, but the checks were made out to Belmont and the receipts were also signed by him. They claimed that the checks would be sent to this company and their share would be deposited at Yale for them. They appealed to the teachers’ desires to help out all young people who are anxious to secure a college education. They confined their operations chiefly to the high school, but also secured some subscriptions from teachers in Central and are said to have worked their fraud over many professors on the hill.”
  • “All K. U. frolicked on the green yesterday in the fifth biennial May Fete which was given by University girls on the golf links south of McCook field in the afternoon and evening, before a crowd of two thousand persons. The festivities were the most elaborate and spectacular ever witnessed at K. U., more than three hundred girls taking part in the pageantry. Helen Rigby of Concordia was chosen to the coveted position of Queen of the May and was crowned amidst the rollicking of the happy dancing maidens. Miss Rigby is a Senior and a member of the Chi Omega sorority. She is tall and slender, and is one of the most striking girls on the hill, with an abundance of beautiful auburn hair.”

When your blood is impure and impoverished it lacks vitality, your digestion is imperfect, your appetite is poor, and all the functions of your body are impaired. Hood’s Sarsaparilla is a wonderful blood tonic. It will build you up quicker than any other medicine. It gives strength to do and power to endure.” … “Sunburn and Tan season now coming on: Better think of Marlborough Peroxide Cream. It softens and whitens the skin. 25c jars at McColloch’s Drug Store.” … “The Bowersock: Friday and Saturday: ‘Fanchon the Cricket’ with Mary Pickford as Fanchon. All photo play fans well know that this irresistible little actress is one of the most sincere and hard working of all screen painters. As Fanchon she portrays with a great power of conception all the dramatic depths of the varying lights and shades in this famous character. There is a naturalness about her impersonation, a sparkling, quaint originality, that makes this role the most wonderful of any she has yet portrayed…. The Paramount Travel pictures will also be shown Friday and Saturday. These are beautifully clear and are of unusual interest to all who have seen them.”
