25 years ago: KU senior bids farewell with yearbook prank

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 14, 1990:

The spirit of pranksterism was alive and well at Kansas University. KU graduating senior Carol Jong, Wichita, had managed to get her picture published seven times in the 1990 “Jayhawker” yearbook — once with her real identity and six others with fake names and majors. “Basically, my roommate and I are seniors this year and we wanted to leave our mark on the school,” Jong explained. “Since we weren’t student body presidents or big football stars, we couldn’t do it the right way so we thought we’d do it the wrong way.” Loretta Bass, Jong’s roommate, had attempted the same prank, but her fellow journalism students had recognized most of her fake photos and pulled them before the yearbook went to press. Although Jong’s friends appreciated the joke, her parents were not amused. “They didn’t like it at all,” she said. “They thought I’d get kicked out of med school.” Jeanine Kreker of the “Jayhawker” said the yearbook staff had learned a lesson from the prank and would have photographers refer to a list of students at future portrait sessions.
