Today in Lawrence: Warm weather, giving back and Rocketboys

Back in the 70s

This afternoon will bring Lawrence’s first taste of 70-degree-plus weather in what seems like longer than it should have been. Look for lots of sunshine this morning, with spotty clouds rolling in around 9 a.m. and lingering the rest of the day. The high of 72 should come around 4 p.m. Then we’ll be back to patchy thunderstorms Thursday through Saturday.

‘Big’ effort

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Douglas County is looking for more volunteers — especially male youth mentors — so if you’re looking to be the next Big, today is for you. Head to the United Way Building, 2518 Ridge Court, at noon for more info on changing the life of someone special in Douglas County.

Rocket till you drop

And don’t miss Texas-based The Rocketboys tonight at The Bottleneck, 737 New Hampshire St. According to the New York Times, the band “sounds like an amped up Death Cab for Cutie with strong Coldplay-style melodies.” If that sounds good to you, catch the show at 8 p.m. Tickets: $11 at the door.
