Lawrence Sertoma Club raises approximately $13,000 at annual barbecue cook-off

Todd Holmes and his son Garret, 7, Silver Lake, sample meats from the Rub Me Tender, Rub Me Sweet booth at the 17th annual Lawrence Sertoma 48 BBQ Cookoff Saturday, May 9, at Rock Chalk Park.

The Lawrence Sertoma Club’s 17th state championship barbeque cook-off raised about $13,000 last Friday and Saturday, coordinator Sandra Studley said.

The annual cook-off features 48 teams in competition for the contest’s grand champion award, Studley said. This year Shake ‘N Bake BBQ of New Haven, Mo., took home the award.

The teams competed in four categories: brisket, pork, ribs and chicken, Studley said. Reserve champions, people’s choice winners and first through 10th places in each category were also selected.

About 500 people attended the event in Rock Chalk Park, 100 Rock Chalk Lane, on Saturday, Studley said. A total of $4,800 was split among the winners.

Revenue from the cook-off goes toward the Sertoma-Schiefelbusch Communication Camp for children with communication challenges, Studley said.
