KU Commencement is this weekend

It’s graduation weekend at Kansas University.

KU has announced nearly 4,550 candidates for degrees, representing 87 Kansas counties, 46 other states and 43 other countries.

More than 4,000 members of the class of 2015 are expected to participate in the university’s 143rd Commencement ceremony Sunday at Memorial Stadium, according to KU. Dozens of individual department events also are planned Friday and Saturday.

On Sunday, the traditional procession — at KU, that’s the graduates’ walk through the Memorial Campanile and down “the Hill” — will be from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The program will be from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Gates to Memorial Stadium open at 9 a.m. for guests. Tickets are not required.

Free parking will be available throughout campus from 1 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Free shuttle buses will run from 8:30 a.m. Sunday until one hour after the ceremony concludes. The route passes Memorial Stadium, Jayhawk Boulevard, Learned Hall, Burge Union, Ambler Student Recreation Center, Murphy Hall and the Kansas Union.

Memorial Drive will be closed to all traffic on Sunday.

Sunday’s ceremony will be broadcast live inside Woodruff Auditorium on the fifth floor of the Kansas Union, and online at commencement.ku.edu.

In case of rain Sunday morning, KU will make an announcement at 9 a.m. online at alert.ku.edu and through other media channels. If weather begins to clear by late morning, KU will attempt to hold a postponed ceremony at 12:30 p.m., for which graduates should assemble on Memorial Drive at noon.
