St. John’s Rummage House offers discounts

The soft slide and click of hangers as people browsed clothes was interspersed with greetings of “good morning” as customers crossed the threshold of St. John’s Rummage House at 1246 Kentucky St.

Longtime volunteer Luz Ibarra, left, and Maria Haake, background right, work at the St. John's Rummage House, 1246 Kentucky St. Saturday, May 9, 2015. The thrift store has an abundance of affordable clothes available.

Rummage House

Address: 1246 Kentucky St.

Hours: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday and 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday

In addition to the clothing, the walls of the two-story house are covered floor to ceiling with items such as belts, purses, shoes, books and toys. But a lot of people don’t know it’s here, said Rummage House volunteer Maria Haake.

“We’re hidden away,” Haake said as she walked through the store Saturday morning. “This is our little treasure trove.”

The Rummage House, a thrift store operated by St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, currently has an overstock of items and is offering discounts, Haake said. Customers can fill a paper grocery bag with clothing for $5, and all adult and teenage clothing is half-off. The sale runs through the end of May, Haake said.

“You can get really good stuff for people on a budget,” she said.

The thrift store is run by volunteers and is open Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The store also has clothes for children and household items such as dishes and small appliances.

The store accepts vouchers from several Lawrence community organizations, such as the Willow Domestic Violence Center, the Lawrence Community Shelter, Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center and the Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority. Haake, who has been volunteering at the store for more than 20 years, said the majority of items are paid for with vouchers, but the store is open to anyone.

“We just try to get affordable stuff to the people that need it,” she said.
