Alleged fugitive from Mississippi charged with indecent solicitation of a child in Douglas County

A 28-year-old transient man wanted in Mississippi was charged Monday with one count of indecent solicitation of a child and one count of obstruction of the legal process in Douglas County District Court.

The man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of enticing a child between the age of 14 and 16 to perform an “unlawful sexual act,” Assistant Douglas County District Attorney Deborah Moody said in court Monday. The man is also accused of obstructing the duties of a law enforcement officer.

At the time of his arrest, the man was wanted on an active warrant out of Washington County in Mississippi on an armed robbery charge. He will face an extradition hearing following the conclusion of the Douglas County case.

The man had been staying at the Lawrence Community Shelter and had no identifiable ties to the community, Moody said.

Douglas County Judge Pro Tem James George set bond at $50,000. If the man posts bail, he is not allowed to return to the shelter as a condition of his bond.

When asked if he would like to say something about the bond amount, the man told George he did not understand what prompted the solicitation charge.

“I really don’t know what to say,” the man said. “I thought I was just here for lying about who I was.”
