100 years ago: Local man shot in roadside robbery; three arrested

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for May 3, 1915:

  • “For eighty cents and an Elgin watch Harry Porter, Frank Palmer and Wiley Hash, each nineteen years old, shot and robbed Oscar Wilson Sunday morning about twelve fifteen o’clock on the California road one mile west and three miles south of Lecompton. Wilson was taken to Simmons hospital where he is at the point of death. The boys were apprehended this morning by Sheriff Cummings and brought to Lawrence where they confessed to the holdup…. The bullet was found to have entered the right side and ranged upward through the lungs, lodging in the left shoulder. The condition of Wilson will not permit the necessary operation to remove the lead.”
  • “Because the situation in Belgium is more acute than it was last fall and the bread line of hungry families is right there the same as ever, the Kansas Belgian Relief Fund Executive Committee has undertaken a campaign to send 10,000 Family Food Boxes to Belgium. Kansas has already done wonders. She always does her part. The Kansas Belgian Relief Fund is deeply grateful for all this. But if we stop sending food now the Belgians will starve. Those self-contented, well-fed persons who now close their purses and say, ‘we helped bring these people through the winter,’ only show ignorance of the situation and are proving to be only half friends of these people since they are deserting while the people are still hungry.”
  • “During the past thirty-six hours the condition of W. H. Pendleton has steadily improved compared with the preceding period of the same duration. At noon today the physicians were particularly encouraged to hope for his steady improvement and ultimate recovery. The family desire to express their thanks and full appreciation of the thoughtfulness of the general public in refraining from driving noisy vehicles through the block — Tennessee street between Tenth and Eleventh — since Mr. Pendleton became ill.”
  • “A large number of the Lawrence Merchants and citizens were at the Eldridge Hotel this morning to meet the Pike’s Peak, Ocean to Ocean highway sociability tour. They were delayed between Kansas City and Lawrence on account of the condition of the road. The drivers said that the roads were very rough. This is probably due to the amount of rain that has fallen in the past few days…. The company consisted of twenty people in five cars…. The tourists were very much pleased with the light refreshments of sandwiches and lemonade which was served.”
  • “Madame Strong, in her eighty-first year, mother of Chancellor Strong, sang a solo, ‘My Faith Looks Up To Thee,’ at the close of the sermon at Mother’s Day exercises held yesterday in the Baptist church. According to custom Mother’s Day is held the second Sunday in May, but as yesterday was communion Sunday at the Baptist Church the observances for the two days were combined. The mothers were the guests of honor and no one entered the church without a flower.”
