Raiders draft KU’s Dexter McDonald in final round

Only 14 picks remained in the entire seven-round NFL Draft Saturday when Kansas University cornerback Dexter McDonald finally heard his name called.

The Oakland Raiders, who earlier in the day, in Round 5, selected KU’s Ben Heeney, made McDonald the 25th pick of the seventh round and the third Jayhawk taken in the 2015 draft.

A physical, 6-foot-1, 200-pound corner, McDonald stood out at KU’s pro day, with a 4.42-second 40-yard dash, a vertical jump of 40 and 1/2 inches and a broad jump of 11 feet, 2 inches.

The Kansas City, Missouri, native likely would have signed a free-agent deal after the draft concluded, but Oakland chose him in the final round and avoided having to compete with other franchises for McDonald’s services.

The Raiders picked the 200-pound corner one round after fellow KU defensive back JaCorey Shepherd went to Philadelphia.
