Free State seniors lead way to swimming quad victory

Free State High's swimmers get pumped up a swimming and diving meet Thursday, April 30, 2015, at FSHS.

Free State High’s girls swim and dive team had not lost a meet all year going into the FSHS quadrangular Thursday, and the Firebirds had no plans of changing that on the team’s Senior Night.

The Firebirds scored 515 points and won 11 of 12 events to win their quad against Lawrence High (345), Olathe South (267) and Shawnee Mission North (173).

While the FSHS seniors were excited for their final home meet, they’re still focused more on what lies ahead.

“It was the last time I swam at home, and it was emotional at some points,” senior Courtney Caldwell said. “But we still have league and state to work toward, and we’re pretty excited about that.”

Caldwell won the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke and also helped the Firebirds win the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. The 200 freestyle relay had a little extra meaning to Caldwell, as she was joined by fellow seniors Kat LaFever, Alexa Malik and Eliza Anderson.

“It was really fun. We didn’t even realize until yesterday,” Caldwell said. “We were like, ‘We should probably do a senior relay,’ and it was a lot of fun to be able to have all of us on there.”

The N.C. State signee was not the only Firebird who won multiple events. Ava Cormaney won the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, and Cierra Campbell won the 100 butterfly and 500 freestyle. Alvena Walpole (200 freestyle) and Sydney Sirimongkhon-Dyck (50 freestyle) wrapped up the Free State individual champions. Everything for the Firebirds was kick-started by Janet Stefanov, Cormaney, Walpole and Campbell beginning the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay.

While Free State coach Annette McDonald was pleased with her team’s all-around success, she believes even faster times from her best swimmers are yet to come.

“Some of our swimmers were doing really, really well, but our top swimmers are still working to be successful later,” McDonald said. “This wasn’t a meet to rest or taper or do anything like that for.”

Lawrence High coach Kent McDonald echoed his counterpart’s sentiments. The LHS coach saw a number of positives from the Lions’ second-place finish but believes there is still room for improvement.

“Overall, we were shooting for second, and the other two teams we beat were Sunflower League schools,” the LHS coach said, “which is important to me, (and) hopefully important to the team.”

The Lions were led by two runner-up finishes from sophomore Mary Reed-Weston, which both came to Cormaney in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.

“I think both of her performances were really good,” Kent McDonald said. “They were against the same girl that she has had kind of a rivalry with now. They’re just close, and she’s just got to figure out a way to get over the bump there and get her.”

Reed-Weston relishes the opportunities to compete against the Firebirds’ top swimmers.

“There’s a little bit more pressure because they’re (the Firebirds) such a good team,” Reed-Weston said. “But then it also helps create a better atmosphere to swim fast in.”

The Lions also got another second-place finish from Brittany Archer in the 500 freestyle, the highlight of the meet for Kent McDonald.

“Well, Brittany, she has trouble seeing, and she didn’t know she was racing a Free State girl (Carter Stacey) in,” the LHS coach said. “To me, it was the most exciting race of the night she didn’t even know about it.”
