Lawrence High senior Alex Ginsberg completed the 100 fly Tuesday at Carl Knox Natatorium and saw she finished just more than six seconds behind the winner, taking second place.

And she had no issue with that.

Her teammate Morgan Traughber, a talented freshman, won the race with ease. That’s what Ginsberg, a captain, likes to see.

“It’s really nice to have someone faster than me,” Ginsberg said of competing with — and sometimes against — Traughber. “In practices, I know, ‘Hey, I need to keep up with her.’ It’s not my competition, but this is what my competition could be like for a potential race.”

Traughber’s winning time of 1:03.34 qualified her for Class 6A state in the 100 fly, as did her second-place time of 2:06.82 in the 200 free.

Lawrence showcased its talented underclassmen throughout the home meet, which the Lions won against four visitors.

Lawrence sophomores Naomi Dale and Susan Frick finished second and third in diving, sophomore Mary Reed-Weston won the 100 free (57.55) and 100 breast (1:13.36), and sophomore Brittany Archer took first place in the 500 free (5:54.11).

Lions coach Kent McDonald said senior captains Ginsberg, Nicole Oblon and Hannah Lee have been looking forward to their final year with the program, because now they can take charge. He said they help bring the younger competitors along, and train with Traughber at practices.

“They are setting the pace and she is working, staying right there with them,” McDonald said. “I think they’re working pretty well together as a team.”

Oblon, who took second in the 50 free (27.64) and teamed with Reed-Weston, Traughber and Archer to win the 200 free relay, said the younger Lions do a pretty good job on their own, too.

“It’s really good to have the young swimmers come up and help the team out,” Oblon said.

Just a few years back, Ginsberg was the youngster leaning on her elders. Now she is on the other side of that relationship. She loves the energy the new swimmers and freshmen bring.

“Compared to some teams,” the senior captain said, “we’re pretty young. But it leaves a lot of room to build and be better.”
