Player of the Year

Madison Piper, Free State

The 5-foot-10 sophomore forward frustrated opposing teams with her ability to drill three-pointers, make mid-range jumpers and drive to the rim. Piper, who was selected as the Sunflower League’s Player of the Year, ranked among the league’s best with 17 points and seven rebounds per game.

Coach of the Year

Bob Martin, Baldwin

With a balanced lineup of strong players, Martin led the Bulldogs to a 21-4 record and second place at the Class 4A-II state tournament. It was their first state tournament appearance since 1997. BHS was led by Taylor Cawley, Madeline Neufeld, Abby Ogle, Maddie Ogle, Kyna Smith, Alexia Stein and Corey Valentine.

First team

Megan Bonar, De Soto — The South Dakota signee capped off her strong career by lifting the Wildcats to a 12-10 record by posting 14.8 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game. Bonar, who earned first-team All-Frontier League honors, recorded more than 1,200 points and 500 rebounds in her four-year career.

Sarah Coversup, Free State — A transfer from Horton High, Coversup was among the Sunflower League leaders by averaging 14.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-1 senior was tough to guard in the paint with her height and strength, helping FSHS to a 17-5 record.

Corie Fischer, Ottawa — A four-year starter for the Cyclones, Fischer recorded 17 double-doubles this season and led OHS in scoring (14.5), rebounding (10.3) and steals (2.2). The first-team All-Frontier League selection grabbed 216 rebounds this season and 577 in her career, breaking school records.

Tori Huslig, Veritas — Huslig followed up a strong freshman season with an even better sophomore campaign. She led the Eagles with 19.3 points per game, scoring at least 15 points in 20 of her team’s 22 games. She also averaged 4.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists, earning first-team All-KCAA state-tournament honors.

Caitie Kaifes, Mill Valley — The 5-foot-11 junior forward led the Jaguars with 16 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Kaifes lifted MVHS to an 18-4 record, and she was a dominant player in the paint at the end of the season, scoring on 58 percent of her shots inside the three-point line.

Jabria Leggett, Mill Valley — Leggett was nearly impossible to stop with her ability to drive deep into the lane to score or find her teammates for easy buckets. The 5-foot-6 point guard, who has signed with Johnson County Community College, averaged 13.4 points, 5.0 assists and 2.4 steals per game.

Brette Moore, Ottawa — A future volleyball player at Fort Scott Community College, Moore was strong in the low post all season. The 6-foot-1 forward had four double-doubles and recorded 12.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, helping the Cyclones to a 13-8 record.

Maddie Ogle, Baldwin — Ogle led the Bulldogs in their full-court defense and fast-break offense, posting a team-best 13.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. The 6-foot senior was a first-team All-Frontier League and all-state selection, and she dominated in the state tournament, scoring 20.7 points per game.

Madison Piper, Free State — Piper frustrated opposing defenses all season long, leading the Firebirds to a sub-state title game. She finished second in the league in scoring (17 points), third in rebounding (7.1) and fourth in assists (3.2), earning a first-team all-state selection.

Marissa Pope, Lawrence — The 5-foot-3 senior point guard led the Lions on both sides of the court all season, leading LHS to its first sub-state victory since 2009. Pope, a four-year starter, earned second-team All-Sunflower League honors after averaging 12.1 points and 3.4 assists per game.
