LHS girls second at Topeka West

? Senior sisters Matia and Rebecca Finley won the discus and shot put, respectively, to power Lawrence High’s girls track and field team to a second-place finish Thursday at the Topeka West Relays.

Matia took first in the discus with a throw of 143 feet, while Rebecca’s mark of 39 feet 8 inches gave her the win in the shot put.

The Lions’ sprinters shined in their season debut as well with Jensen Edwards winning the 200- and 400-meter dashes, and Myah Yoder blazing to a victory in the 100-meter dash.

Edwards and Yoder also helped lead the 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams to first-place finishes. Ja Mya Dye and Marissa Pope rounded out the 4×100-meter squad, while Pope and Leah Gabler completed the 4×400 relay.

Caroline Dykes was the LHS girls’ final event champion after a throw of 116 feet 8 inches in the javelin.

The Lawrence High boys took third place, thanks to a sweep in the 100 and 200-meter dashes by JD Woods.

Woods clocked in at 11.40 seconds in the 100 before coming back with a time of 22.92 seconds to win the 200.

The Lions dominated the 100 and 300 hurdles as well with Dearion Cooper winning the 110 hurdles and Trey Moore beating the field in 300 hurdles.

Bryant and Moore teamed up with Jalen Dudley and Ekow Boye-doe for a victory in the 4×100-meter relay.

The Lions will be back in action at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday as they host a dual meet against Free State at LHS.
