Douglas County Commision approves Peaslee Center funding package

Douglas County commissioners on Wednesday unanimously approved a package of funding for the Dwayne Peaslee Technical Training Center, set to open this fall.

The center, which is being spearheaded by the Economic Development Corporation of Lawrence and Douglas County, will be located in the former Honeywell Industries building near Haskell Avenue and 31st Street. It will offer adults job training in health care, information technology, engineering and other technical fields.

The EDC asked both the city and county to contribute $500,000 in funding to support renovations at the facility. The EDC plans to contribute another $200,000 to renovations in addition to the $1 million it has already invested in the building.

The project also sought loans of $150,000 each from the city and county to renovate a section of the building that will be used to house the Lawrence Workforce Center, which is moving to that location. Additionally, the EDC asked for a rebate of the $64,000 in property taxes paid for the building in 2014 and industrial revenue bonds, which would give the project a sales tax exemption for construction materials purchased for the renovations.

On Tuesday, city commissioners approved the funding package, and county commissioners followed suit Wednesday. County Commissioner Nancy Thellman said the project was an example of successful symbiosis of city, county, industry and organization leaders and the EDC.

“It’s remarkable. The whole project could have been derailed many times,” Thellman said. “This is a great example of all these different entities working together to accomplish a big idea.”
