(Re) Engaged Architecture Symposium to feature six renowned architects

Six renowned architects will speak at Saturday’s (Re) Engaged Architecture Symposium, Kansas University said in a news release.

The symposium is hosted by KU’s School of Architecture, Design & Planning. The event will also acknowledge the 20th anniversary of Studio 804, a yearlong program for graduate students entering their final year in the school’s Masters of Architecture program.

The six architects scheduled to lecture at the symposium are:

  • Brian MacKay-Lyons, of MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects, in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
  • Frank Harmon, of Frank Harmon Architects, in Raleigh, N.C.
  • Ted Flato, of Lake | Flato, in San Antonio, Texas.
  • Brigitte Shim, of Shim•Sutcliffe, in Toronto.
  • Marlon Blackwell and his firm, Marlon Blackwell Architects, of Fayetteville, Ark.
  • Andrew Freear, of Rural Studio, in Newbern, Ala.

Lecturers will present on topics including handcraft displays, traditional details, regionally sourced materials and attention to local climate and geology, the release said.

Studio 804 Director Dan Rockhill and Metropolis magazine Editor Susan Szenasy will also contribute throughout the symposium, the release said.

The event will be held at the East Hills Construction Innovation Laboratory, 3813 Greenway Drive, and run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tickets cost $199 for the public and $25 for KU students. Registration information can be found at www.cpep.ku.edu/architecture.
