Lawrence High School student wins state chess championship, qualifies for nationals

Lawrence High School student Kiana Hajiarbabi won the Girls State Chess Championship on Saturday at Kansas University, officials said.

Saturday’s victory qualifies Hajiarbabi to compete against other state champions in a girls’ national tournament this summer, said Phil Wedge, Cordley Chess Club sponsor.

Shahrzad Hajiarbabi, of Lawrence High; Logan Camarda, of West Middle; Annelise Hoopes, of Cordley Elementary; Mikah Beaty of Liberty Memorial Central Middle and Jenny Li of Quail Run Elementary placed third, fourth, sixth, 10th and 11th in the competition respectively, Wedge said.
