40 years ago: Director chosen for new Watkins museum

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 22, 1975:

The newly chosen director of the Elizabeth M. Watkins Community Museum wanted to make it “a focus for interpreting regional and local history for the community.” The Douglas County Historical Society had announced this week the selection of Arthur Townsend, 35, Annapolis, Md., to the post of director of the nearly-completed museum in the Watkins Building, 11th and Massachusetts. Townsend, who had been serving as director of the Maryland Historical Trust, was to come to Lawrence later this year to take on his new job.
