40 years ago: County to increase testing of warning sirens

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 21, 1975:

  • At a city-county meeting this week, Douglas County Commission Chair Arthur Heck announced that local disaster warning sirens would be tested more frequently — twice monthly, rather then once a month. The sirens were to be tested on the first and third Monday of each month, he said, following a recommendation by Conrad Co. officials, who had sold the sirens to the county. It was felt the sirens were idle too long when tested only once a month. Officials said they were “still in the dark” about the cause of unscheduled siren activations earlier this year.
  • Kansas University’s proposed visual arts building was to go out for bids again after plans were redrawn in hopes of keeping the project within its budget. The Kansas Board of Regents made the decision at a meeting in Topeka today. Bids for the project had been opened earlier this month, but they had exceeded the available funds by $900,000.
