25 years ago: Census to start with overnight ‘homeless count’

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 20, 1990:

  • The first stage of the 1990 U.S. census was getting under way tonight in Lawrence and nationwide with what was being referred to as the homeless count. Between 10 and 12 “enumerators” from the U.S. Census Bureau were to be in Lawrence throughout the night to count the homeless and other “special populations” as part of the 1990 census. The enumerators, traveling in pairs, were to visit 11 shelters and other areas in Douglas County to count people who didn’t live in a traditional home or dormitory-type setting.
  • Four years from 1990, faculty members at Kansas University were to have the option of continuing to work on campus after age 70. Effective in 1994, federal legislation would end mandatory retirement for college faculty at age 70. KU officials were expressing some concern about how the new rules would affect matters of tenure and early retirement.
