Wichita — The second-seeded Lawrence High boys basketball team advanced to the Class 6A state semifinals with a 64-46 victory over No. 7 seed Wichita South on Wednesday night at Koch Arena.

The victory improved LHS to 22-1 and moved the Lions into an 8:15 p.m. Friday match-up against No. 3 Shawnee Mission North, which beat Derby, 65-51, in the last Class 6A quarterfinal of the day on Wednesday.

Justin Roberts led the Lions with 24 points, including 15 in the first half. LHS outscored Wichita South 34-23 in the second half. Anthony Bonner, like Roberts, shot 7-of-12 from the field and helped lead the LHS rout with 19 points.

John Barbee led LHS with 12 rebounds and Price Morgan added 8 boards.

The Lions led 14-12 after one quarter. Senior Anthony Bonner, who missed last week’s sub-state championship game with a mild concussion scored five points and junior point guard Roberts added seven.

A Price Morgan put-back just before the halftime buzzer helped LHS push that lead to a more comfortable 30-23 edge by the end of the second quarter.

Roberts added eight more points in the second quarter and led all scorers with 15 first-half points. The Lions shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half (11-for-22), including a 5-for-9 mark from three-point range. Roberts drained three of the five treys he attempted and Bonner and guard Ben Rajewski each added one from three-point range.

Roberts added five more points in the third and Bonner got into a groove, as well, which included a dunk that pushed the LHS lead to double digits. The Lions outscored South 18-7 in the third quarter and took a 48-30 lead into the final eight minutes.

In earlier action Wednesday, top-seeded Wichita East, which handed LHS its only loss of the year, knocked off No. 8 Maize, 59-46, and fourth-seeded Olathe East got past No. 5 seed Olathe North, 60-48.
