City Commission, school board primary has 13.8 percent voter turnout

The primary elections for the Lawrence City Commission and Lawrence school board saw a turnout of 13.8 percent, according to official results from Douglas County Clerk Jamie Shew.

A total of 8,818 ballots were cast in the March 3 election. Almost 950 were advance ballots and 111 were provisional.

The six candidates who will be on the April 7 ballot all finished with over 2,000 votes and at least 600 mores votes than the seventh-place finisher.

Leslie Soden led the way with 3,618 votes, followed by Stan Rasmussen, 2,899; Stuart Boley, 2,837; incumbent Terry Riordan, 2,576; Matthew Herbert, 2,488; and incumbent Bob Schumm, 2,118.

Three will be elected to the commission April 7. Mike Anderson, Cori Viola, David Crawford, Kristie Adair, Greg Robinson, Rob Sands, Gary Williams and Justin Priest all finished with less than 1,500 votes.

For the school board two-year term, Mary Loveland was the top vote-getter with 2,727 votes, followed by incumbent Marcel Harmon, 2,215; Kelly Spurgeon, 1,566; and Norine Spears, 1,416.

Loveland and Harmon will face off for that two-year seat April 7. Seven other candidates are running for four four-year terms.
