26-year-old man charged in connection with alleged drive-by shooting on Iowa Street

A 26-year-old Mission man was charged Monday with criminal discharge and possession of a firearm, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana in connection with an alleged drive-by shooting Saturday.

Bryne Dvon Draper was arrested around 2 a.m. Saturday after officers responded to a report of a person shooting a handgun from a vehicle, Lawrence police spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said. The caller said Draper allegedly started shooting at another vehicle near the intersection of 15th and Iowa streets as the vehicles drove northbound.

Officers soon found Draper’s vehicle on McDonald Drive and stopped him at the Kansas Turnpike toll plaza, McKinley said. Shell casings and marijuana were found inside the vehicle, McKinley said, and Draper was arrested.

No one was injured in the gunfire, but a home near Orchard Drive and Iowa Street was struck while people were inside, McKinley said. Officers did not find any damage to the other vehicle allegedly involved in the altercation.

Upon further investigation, officers found a handgun believed to have been involved in the incident alongside the roadway south of where the car was stopped, McKinley said.

Draper is being held in the Douglas County Jail on a $50,000 bond. If convicted, he could face up to 149 months, or more than 12 years, in prison, depending on his criminal history.

Draper will make his next appearance in court Thursday. Draper’s booking photo was not available as of 4 p.m. Monday.
