Irish road bowling fundraiser has high turnout, benefits local charities

Kilts, kegs of beer and the lobbing of a 28-ounce steel ball came together in the fourth annual Irish Road Bowling Fundraiser Sunday afternoon at Clinton State Park.

The competition, a fundraiser for the Lawrence St. Patrick’s Day Parade, saw its best turnout yet, with about 40 teams participating, said Dani Davey, co-chair of the parade committee.

The event raised approximately $4,500, Davey said. It was the ninth of 10 fundraising events leading up to the Lawrence St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Proceeds from the events and the parade will be donated to charities that serve area youth.

The object of Irish road bowling, which involves no pins, is to throw the ball as far as one can and complete the course in as few throws, or “strokes,” as possible. As music played from loudspeakers, participants played the approximately one-mile course with coolers in tow.

Teams consisted of three to five members, with each team donating $120 to participate. An award ceremony at 23rd Street Brewery followed the event, and the top three finishing teams received prizes. The winning team — Michael Tate, Danny Zamora, Bobby Pauley and Casey McCollum — finished the course in 23 strokes, Davey said.

This is the 28th year for the Lawrence St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which, as of last year, had raised more than $800,000 for local charities, Davey said. This year’s proceeds will be donated to the Douglas County Toys for Tots, Just Food Youth Cooking Program and Centro Hispano.

The final fundraising event will be the Motorcycle Poker Run, which will start at noon Saturday at the Slow Ride Roadhouse, 1350 N. Third St. Additional details can be found at http://lawrencestpatricksdayparade.com/pokerrun.html.

This year’s parade will begin at 1 p.m. March 17 at 11th and Massachusetts streets.
