House fire reported south of Lawrence

No one was injured when a home fire broke out on East 1485 Road Saturday night.

Douglas County dispatch reported a house on fire at 742 E. 1485 Road, south of Lawrence, about 10:55 p.m. Witnesses reported heavy smoke was visible and the home was engulfed in flames.

A propane tank may be involved in the house fire, according to scanner traffic on Saturday. Firefighters on the scene reported intense heat that kept them from the back side of the house. Responders were working to keep traffic away from the scene.

Palmyra Fire Chief Randy DeMersseman report that the house’s one male resident was not home when the fire started. Douglas County deputies made contact with the homeowner and informed him of the fire. The resident has one cat and one dog, and both pets got out of the house on their own and are safe, DeMersseman said.

The state fire marshal has been requested to handle the investigation into the fire’s cause.

The fire was brought under control around midnight. No injuries were reported.
