Today in Lawrence: Spring making an appearance; DST on Sunday; plays and more

Glory be to spring

There’s a glorious weekend ahead, with sunny skies and warming temps. According to the National Weather Service, today will be sunny with a high near 53. Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low around 29. Saturday — this is good — more sun, with a high near 60. SIXTY! Saturday night, expect mostly clear skies, with a low around 30. Sunday, more of the same: mostly sunny, with a high near 59. Lovely!

Daylight Saving Time

No matter what else you do this weekend, don’t forget to turn your clocks one hour ahead at 2 a.m. Sunday (or before you go to bed). Yes, you lose an hour of sleep. But as the weather gets warmer, you may realize it’s worth it.

Climate change and civil rights

Rev. Dr. Gerald Durley, a native Kansan, has spoken across faith lines on the topic of climate change and other issues. He will deliver the address “Climate Change Is a Civil Rights Issue” at 2 p.m. Friday in the Centennial Room at the Kansas Memorial Union – Level Six, 1301 Jayhawk Blvd. At 6 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 2415 Clinton Parkway (Chapel) there will be a roundtable conversation with a reception afterward. The event is sponsored by Kansas Christians United (continuing work of Kansas Ecumenical Ministries/Kansas Council of Churches), EcoTeam of First Presbyterian Church and KU’s Ecumenical Campus Ministries.

Race and real estate

Theatre Lawrence presents “Clybourne Park,” a provocative play about race, real estate, and the volatile values of each. It has won nearly every honor the theater world has to give, including the Olivier Award, the Evening Standard Award and the Tony. The play starts at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Theatre Lawrence, 4660 Bauer Farm Drive.

Food stuff at the library

Kids, find out what kind of foods are going to keep you healthy, strong and on your game (whatever game you like best)! The Nutrition Carnival is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St. While you’re there, your parents may want to pick up a book to help put some of your new nutrition knowledge into practice. Visit the Friends of the Public Library Cookbook Sale, 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturday in the lobby of the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St.

Violin at the Lied

Taiwanese-American violinist Paul Huang will perform at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Lied Center Pavilion, 1600 Stewart Drive. Huang has won first prize at the 2011 Young Concert Artists International Auditions and first prize at the 2009 International Violin Competition Sion-Valais in Switzerland.
