Lawrence school board will vote on Eldridge tax abatement

The Lawrence school board will vote at its Monday meeting on whether to give a 15-year, 95 percent tax abatement to the Eldridge Hotel for an expansion project.

In February, Eldridge officials brought the same request to the Lawrence City Commission, which gave its initial approval, and the Douglas County Commission, which supported a 15-year, 85 percent deal.

The project is expected to cost $12.5 million. It would develop a vacant lot next door to the Eldridge, which currently contributes $4,900 in taxes annually. It’s estimated the property will pay $11,000 in taxes in the project’s first year of operations with a 95 percent abatement.

The county went with an 85 percent abatement since the county does not receive as much sales tax revenue as a the city, County Commissioner Mike Gaughan said after the vote.

Eldridge general manager Nancy Longhurst said after that meeting that she thought an 85 percent abatement “will work for us.”

Superintendent Rick Doll will bring the item to the school board, with a recommended motion that it approve a 15-year, 95 percent abatement.

The expansion will add 54 guest rooms, plus restaurant and bar space, 7,000 square feet of banquet space and other amenities.

In other business Monday, the school board will also discuss implementing a new evaluation rubric for athletics coaches and purchasing $24,500 in additional resources for the district’s Advancement Via Individual Determination, or AVID, program. The program instructs students with lackluster grades on good studying habits.

The board will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the district offices, 110 McDonald Drive.
