Vote in today’s primary elections! 9 percent turnout reported at 3 p.m.

Brad Finkeldei votes Tuesday morning at the Carnegie Building, 200 West 9th Street, in primary elections for Lawrence City Commission and school board candidates. Voters will narrow the list of candidates for the general election April 7.

About 9 percent of registered voters had cast ballots in Tuesday’s primary election as of 3 p.m., according to Douglas County Clerk Jameson Shew.

The Lawrence City Commission primary and the USD 497 school board primary drew 4,584 of 63,952 registered voters to the polls as of 3 p.m. Another 925 had cast advance ballots for turnout of 8.7 percent.

Polls close at 7 p.m. The 2013 primary election, which took place during a snowstorm, saw just 8.6 percent turnout.

Fourteen candidates signed up for three at-large seats on the City Commission. Six of those candidates will have their names placed on the ballot for the April 7 general election.

Four candidates are contending for a two-year term on the school board. Two of those candidates will advance to the general election, along with seven candidates competing for four four-year terms.
