40 years ago: Historic electric car en route to Watkins Museum

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 3, 1975:

Lawrence’s one and only Milburn Light Electric car had a test run this week and was reported to be “amazing” with a “shockingly smooth” ride, according to local officials who enjoyed a sampling of its powers. The car had departed its temporary storage in Fire Station No. 2 on a recent Saturday and had traveled down Haskell and around the corner. The car, rebuilt by the Lawrence Antique Auto Club after sitting neglected at the city water plant for years, was now restored “as near the original” as possible, according to Ron Thornton, former club president. It was now to be donated to the historical society and put on display in the Elizabeth M. Watkins Community Museum, after which it was not expected to travel down the streets of Lawrence again. Ceremonies for the car’s installation were scheduled for March 15. The car had once belonged to Mrs. Arthur Henley, wife of a Lawrence industrialist, and had been donated to the city by the Henley estate in 1937.
