District, teachers begin negotiations for 2015-16 school year

Representatives from the Lawrence school district and the local teachers union met Monday to begin negotiations for teacher contracts for the 2015-16 school year.

A bump in salaries will again be a talking point this year, said David Reber, one of the negotiators for the Lawrence Education Association. But with cuts in state school funding looming, negotiations are not expected to venture into that topic for several more weeks.

During Monday’s hour-long session, the teachers proposed increases of $1 per hour for things like chaperoning a dance or serving on a curriculum development committee.

The two sides also heard a presentation from a committee that proposed a new modified block schedule for both brick-and-mortar high schools. Reber said the addition of the upcoming College and Career Center, where students and teachers will travel back and forth from school, will force a restructured class schedule.

Reber also said that over the course of the negotiations process he expects there to be dialogue over “tweaking” the district’s teacher evaluation process.
