100 years ago: Window-peeper arrested; new fire truck tested on hills; choral society organized

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 1, 1915:

  • “The police officers were called to the residence of A. V. Mackey at about 10 o’clock Saturday night. People living near their home saw a man walking about the house, peeking in at all of the windows seemingly in an attempt to get one of them open. The officers arrived at the house in a very short time and on seeing them the man ran down the alley. A few shots stopped the man and he was taken to the police station where he gave his name as Walter Monroe. He is being held at the county jail awaiting the investigation of the case. The officials do not know what charge will be placed against him.”
  • “The new fire truck which was installed at the fire department Saturday is being tested out today. It is loaded with the ordinary load that it will be expected to carry and will be tested on some of the Lawrence hills and in the mud. The car, so far as construction is concerned, is everything that was expected of it and will be a valuable asset to the department. Today is regular fire drill day and the fire men are kept busy in placing the new apparatus and getting it in position where it will be placed for service. One of the men from the company will remain here with the car until the drivers become accustomed to it.”
  • “Little Margaret Rohe, the most popular little girl who ever lived in Lawrence, who is now known by her literary name of Margaret Mason and in real life is Margaret Howard, the wife of Roy Howard, manager of the United Press, sailed today for England to join her husband in his effort to break through the censorship. Roy Howard went to England some days ago and cabled for Mrs. Howard to join him and she left Saturday on the St. Paul, which makes the passage safer than on an English ship.”
  • “To make Lawrence one of the greatest musical centers of Kansas is the plan of the Lawrence Choral Union recently organized here to produce operatic selections. The union is composed of about 150 local people interested in music and the second meeting of the association will be held in Fraternal Aid Union Hall Tuesday evening. At this meeting plans will be formulated to give the first concert in about ten weeks.”
  • “Lawrence Winn, a Freshman at the University, sustained a serious dislocation of the ankle while attempting to clear the bar in the pole vault at Kansas City Saturday night.”
  • “Carl Clews was in Lawrence today with the state pay checks for the University employes. The pay checks make quite a large bundle.”
