Defendant in alleged massage parlor human-trafficking case pleads not guilty; jury trials scheduled

A 51-year-old man charged with one count of aggravated human trafficking and one count of promoting the sale of sexual relations after a Lawrence massage parlor raid pleaded not guilty to the charges on Monday.

The charges came after Lawrence police officers executed search warrants on Spring Massage, 600 Lawrence Ave., and a Lawrence residence April 28 “seeking additional evidence related to sexual crimes alleged to have occurred at the massage parlor,” Lawrence police spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said in April. Li and codefendant Guihong Xiao, 45, of Lawrence were arrested later that day.

Xiao was charged with two counts of aggravated human trafficking, one count of promoting the sale of sexual relations and one count of misdemeanor selling sexual relations.

Charging documents allege that from Feb. 6 to April 28, Li benefited financially from participating in the “recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision or obtaining of” a woman used for involuntary sexual services, resulting in the trafficking charge.

In 2013, Li and Xiao pleaded no contest to charges of promoting prostitution after a police raid on two massage businesses in Bonner Springs, according to municipal court records. A Bonner Springs municipal court judge found Li and Xiao guilty and both were required to pay a $600 fine and court costs. They did not receive jail sentences because the crimes were city misdemeanor offenses, a Bonner Springs municipal court employee told the Journal-World.

Chief Douglas County District Judge Robert Fairchild last month sealed the arrest affidavits in the Lawrence case, saying that their release may jeopardize the ongoing investigation into the case.

With the arrest affidavit being kept secret and the preliminary hearing being waived, the reasons and details behind the arrests won’t be revealed until further court proceedings occur.

On Monday, Fairchild scheduled Li’s jury trial for Oct. 26 and Xiao’s for Dec. 7. Li is scheduled to next appear in court on Oct. 5, and Xiao will appear next on Nov. 16.

Li and Xiao are currently in the Douglas County Jail on $500,000 bonds in connection with the Lawrence case.
