Man charged with aggravated assault after six-hour standoff with police

A Lawrence man was charged in Douglas County District Court Monday with aggravated assault after a six-hour standoff with police Sunday morning.

Ronnie James Clark

Ronnie James Clark, 48, is accused of threatening a man with a rifle inside Clark’s home at 2438 Ousdahl Road around 5:20 a.m. Sunday.

Police responded to the home around 5:30 a.m., just after the alleged victim left the home uninjured. Police then communicated with Clark, who was aware they were outside the duplex, said Lawrence Police spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley, but Clark would not leave the home.

At least four police vehicles were in the neighborhood, and law enforcement officers, several with rifles, surrounded the duplex. Several nearby families were evacuated from their homes around 6:15 a.m., neighbors said. An armored vehicle and a K-9 unit arrived about 10:15 a.m.

Clark eventually surrendered to officers around 11:30 a.m. Sunday. He was booked into the Douglas County Jail shortly thereafter.

On Monday, Assistant District Attorney Deborah Moody charged Clark with aggravated assault in connection with the incident.

Clark was also charged with a felony third-time DUI from 2014, which he failed to appear for in August, according to court records. An arrest warrant was issued and he was apprehended earlier this month, but posted a $1,500 bond the same day.

Douglas County Judge Pro Tem James George set Clark’s bond at $4,000 for the aggravated assault charge on Monday. If Clark makes bond, he is forbidden from contacting the alleged victim or consuming alcohol.

Clark, who remained in jail as of Monday evening, is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday afternoon.
