25 years ago: Habitat for Humanity launches renovation project

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 22, 1990:

  • About 40 people braved the threatening weather to take part in the launch of a Habitat for Humanity home renovation at 1609 Powers. The event included a rousing rendition of “Bless This House” and the signing of a contract between Habitat and local resident Esther Barnes, who was to purchase the home from Habitat after its renovation. The interior of the Power Street house had been burned this spring, but Habitat officials were planning a complete renovation using donated materials and labor.
  • The 14th annual Sunflower Benefit Horse Show was getting under way today at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. Proceeds from ticket sales to the events were to benefit the O’Connell Youth Ranch. Orville Embrey, president of the O’Connell board of directors, said the boys from the ranch were to help out during the three days of the show, setting up portable stalls, assisting at the gate, and contributing to cleanup efforts. Gayle Hayes, publicity coordinator for the horse show, said organizers had received about 150 entries and had filled all the portable stalls.
