Lawrence’s St. Luke A.M.E. to host solidarity service after South Carolina massacre

In the wake of Wednesday’s massacre at a South Carolina church, Lawrence’s St. Luke A.M.E. Church will host a “Service of Solidarity” at 3 p.m. Sunday at the church, 900 New York St.

On Wednesday, a gunman shot and killed nine people in the Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston, S.C., one of the state’s oldest historically black churches. Police have a suspect in custody: 21-year-old Dylann Roof. The slayings are being investigated as hate crimes.

The Lawrence church invites the public to come Sunday to express concerns and solidarity regardless of faith or affiliation.

The service is coordinated by the group Lawrence Area Clergy.

“There have been individual expressions of anger, lamenting and wishing them well, and when you get [individuals] together then good things happen,” said Thad Holcombe, coordinator for LAC.
