Youth theatre to stage ‘Spring Awakening’ this weekend at Arts Center

The Lawrence Arts Center’s Summer Youth Theatre program will debut its production of “Spring Awakening” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Set in Germany just before the turn of the 20th century, the play follows teenagers (played by local eighth- to 12th-graders) on the bumpy road of adolescence and self-discovery, and will run through Sunday at the Arts Center, 940 New Hampshire St.

Also on the SYT lineup this summer: “Avenue Q” (also performed by eighth- to 12th-graders) from July 23-26 and “Science; BOOM! You’re Welcome” (with fourth- to eighth-graders) from July 16-18.

The series’ new Rookie Program (for first- through third-graders) will stage “The Adventures of Perseus, a Fabulous Greek Myth” on July 11.
