40 years ago: Board of Regents elects first female chair

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 15, 1975:

The Kansas Board of Regents elected its first female chairperson this week, choosing Prudence Hutton, Newton, to head the board for Fiscal Year 1976. Hutton was to replace Elmer Jackson Jr., Kansas City, who had been elected chair in January to fill the unexpired term of Carl Courter. Hutton, only the second woman to serve on the board since its inception, named inflation as the biggest problem facing the regents system, saying, “The cost of everything at the universities and college is soaring, while enrollment is stabilizing.”
