Athlete of the Year

Alexia Stein, Baldwin

Stein capped her prep career by repeating as state champion in the Class 4A shot put and discus. Her winning throw in the shot put (47-1.5) was the best throw in the state this season and ranks eighth in state history. The Iowa Central CC signee owns school records in both events.

Coach of the Year: Jack Hood, Lawrence

The ninth-year coach led the Lions to their second straight regional title and first Class 6A state championship since 1979. LHS earned its 68 state meet points from Jensen Edwards, Matia Finley, Rebecca Finley, Leah Gabler, Marissa Pope and Kyleigh Severa.

First team

Jannell Clampitt, De Soto

For the second straight year, Clampitt swept Frontier League, regional and Class 4A state titles in the pole vault. The Wildcats’ junior broke her own school record, clearing 11 feet, 7 inches, the third-best vault in Kansas this year.

Gabbi Dabney, Free State

Dabney won a state championship in the 100-meter hurdles (14.64 seconds) and took sixth in the long jump. The Kansas University signee added regional and Sunflower League titles in the 100 hurdles.

Jensen Edwards, Lawrence

Edwards won her third straight state title in the 4×400 relay, finished runner-up in the 800 and fourth in the 400. She ended her prep career with school records in four events (4×400, 4×100, sprint medley relay and 800).

Matia Finley, Lawrence

Finley saved her best throws for the end of the year, winning her third straight state championship in the discus (149-3) and finishing third in the shot put. The LHS senior was one of five girls to three-peat at state in an individual event this season.

Rebecca Finley, Lawrence

A Colorado State University signee, Finley won Sunflower League and regional titles in the discus and a regional title in the shot put. At state, she finished runner-up to her twin sister in the discus for the third straight year and took fourth in the shot put.

Callie Hicks, Free State

After winning a state championship in gymnastics in the fall, Hicks added a state title in the pole vault. The FSHS junior broke the school record in the event earlier in the season, clearing 12 feet, 3 inches, the 11th highest mark in state history.

Jordan Hoffman, Baldwin

A future volleyball player for Washburn University, Hoffman won a state title in the javelin, took third in the discus and was sixth in the shot put. Her best throw in the javelin (143-3) ranked sixth in the state this year, and she broke a Frontier League meet record.

Kelsey Kehl, Baldwin

One year after she won a state title in the javelin, Kehl finished runner-up at the 4A state meet to teammates in both the javelin and discus, helping the Bulldogs win their third straight state team title. The junior also finished runner-up in both events at regionals.

Kyleigh Severa, Lawrence

Severa ran the third leg of the 4×400 relay, which won its third straight state title (3:55.55), and finished second in 6A in the long jump. The Lions’ junior added regional titles in the long jump, 4×400 and 4×100.
