Harris is accused of a Monday armed robbery at Heartland Perma-Column, 1841 East 1450 Road, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Sgt. Kristen Dymacek said.

Sheriff’s deputies, Lawrence police and Kansas Highway Patrol troopers assisted in a search Monday for a man, now thought to be Harris, who allegedly displayed a handgun at Heartland and took an unknown amount of money from the business.

Two employees were inside the business at the time of the alleged armed robbery, but no one was injured in the incident, Dymacek said.

The sheriff’s office and the Lawrence Police Department set up a perimeter and searched for the suspect with dogs and a Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter in the area generally south of Grant Township. The patrol helicopter flew over the area from about 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. Monday.

Harris was arrested in Topeka Wednesday and booked into the Douglas County Jail later that afternoon.

According to the Kansas Department of Corrections, Harris has previous convictions of burglary, aggravated burglary and attempted aggravated fleeing from custody for a felony out of Johnson County stemming back to 2004. This is his first court case in Douglas County District Court, according to online court records.

Douglas County Judge Pro Tem James George set Harris’ bond Thursday at $50,000. If he makes bond, he is banned from having contact with any non-law enforcement witness.

Harris is scheduled to make his next appearance in court on Monday afternoon. He remains in the Douglas County Jail.
