Woman in critical but stable condition following accident on U.S. 40; children OK

A 24-year-old Topeka woman is in critical but stable condition after being taken by helicopter to Kansas University Hospital Tuesday following a one-vehicle accident in the 600 block of U.S. Highway 40, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Two adults who were traveling with three young children were seriously injured shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday when their car went off the road in the 600 block of U.S. Highway 40, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Ebony Boykins was ejected from the vehicle after the westbound SUV she was in veered off the road, rolled several times, went through a barbed wire fence and landed on its side in a pasture.

Marcus Love, 24, of Topeka, was also ejected from the vehicle. He was taken by ground ambulance to Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka with serious injuries. Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Steve Lewis said that as of Wednesday morning Love was listed in fair condition. It was not clear who was driving.

Three children under the age of 5, of Topeka, were also in the vehicle, but were not ejected, Lewis said. They were taken to Stormont Vail as a precaution, but were sent home with family members Tuesday night.

It is unclear at this step in the investigation how the five accident victims are related, Lewis said.

The location of the crash is at the bottom of a small, winding hill, just west of the state historic marker of the territorial capital of Kansas near U.S. 40 and County Road 1029.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Kansas Highway Patrol are continuing the accident investigation Wednesday.
