Today in Lawrence: Scorching heat, free City Band concert in the park

The Lawrence City Band Summer Concert Series will be at the South Park Bandstand today.

Another scorcher

In case you missed it, summer has arrived. Today will follow on Tuesday’s hot heels with more of the same. By 10 a.m., the temperatures will already be in the 80s, on their way to a high of 93 this afternoon. Expect lots of blazing sunshine and little cloud cover, so have your sunscreen handy.

Lucky ‘Strike’

The temperature in South Park will be around 84 degrees at 8 p.m., when the Lawrence City Band kicks off its latest free concert, “Strike Up the Band” — the perfect setting for a summer evening in the park with family, or pets. But if big brass isn’t Fido’s thing, take your pups a ways south to the Lawrence Rotary Arboretum, 5100 W. 27th St., at 7:30 p.m. for the Lawrence Jayhawk Kennel Club’s Wednesday Evening Dog Walk.
