Western Douglas County under Flood Warning; Kansas River flooding expected

Kansas River at Lawrence expected to flood Saturday

The National Weather Service in Topeka issued a Flood Warning for western Douglas County Friday morning.

The warning, which will be in effect until 4 p.m. Friday, also includes northern sections of Franklin and Osage counties, and notes that area farmers reported rainfall totals of 4 to 5 inches.

Lawrence Municipal Airport reported 1.38 inches of precipitation overnight.

The weather service has also issued a Flood Warning for the Kansas River at Lawrence, from Friday night to Sunday morning.

That warning predicts minor flooding during the day Saturday as the river reaches its flood stage of 18 feet. As of Friday morning, the river was at 15.8 feet. Flooded areas may include lowlands outside the levee on the north side of the river. Burcham Park will be closed on the south side of the river.

The Kansas River at Lecompton is also expected to flood.
