Former Free State standout Lewis helping Maryland in NCAA play

Last weekend Free State High’s baseball team won a Class 6A state championship. This weekend one of the program’s alumni has a shot at advancing to the College World Series.

Senior Maryland left fielder Tim Lewis helped the Terrapins knock off the NCAA Tournament’s No. 1 overall seed, UCLA, in two of their three meetings at a Los Angeles regional.

A 2011 FSHS graduate who spent two seasons at Allen Community College before moving on to Division I baseball, Lewis built on his 2014 NCAA tourney experience in his second straight trip to the postseason. Lewis’s two-out, two-run triple in the bottom of the second versus UCLA on Saturday keyed a 4-1 Maryland victory. He had one hit apiece in the Terps’ three games against the Bruins after going 0-for-3 in an opening win against Ole Miss.

Now one of 16 teams still in the hunt for a national championship, Maryland begins a best-of-three Super Regional at Virginia’s Davenport Field at 3 p.m. today (ESPNU). The Terps reached their first Super Regional in program history in Lewis’s first season under coach John Szefc, and Maryland will face UVA (37-22) on the road on that stage for the second season in a row.

Lewis went 1-for-4 as Maryland won the first game at Virginia in the 2014 postseason, but the Cavaliers took the next two as Lewis went hitless and Virginia moved on to Omaha, Nebraska, home of the College World Series.

Playing their first season in the Big Ten after leaving the ACC, the Terrapins finished tied for third, but Maryland and conference champion Illinois are the only Big Ten teams remaining in the postseason.

A senior left fielder, Lewis has started 58 games for Maryland (42-22) this season. The left-handed hitter is batting .215, with 43 hits, 24 runs scored and seven doubles. Lewis is fourth in the Big Ten with five triples.
