High-speed chase leads Lawrence officers into Johnson County

Lawrence police engaged in a high-speed chase on Kansas Highway 10 after a vehicle failed to stop for a Lawrence officer early Monday morning.

Just before 4 a.m., a Lawrence police officer attempted to stop an eastbound vehicle traveling around 75 mph near the intersection of 23rd Street and Haskell Avenue, Lawrence Police Department spokesman Sgt. Trent McKinley said.

The driver of the vehicle failed to pull over in the 45 mph speed zone and instead began accelerating, continuing east on K-10, McKinley said.

A Douglas County sheriff’s deputy assisted near Eudora, deploying “spike strips,” which puncture tires, McKinley said. Two of the vehicle’s tires struck the spike strips, but the vehicle continued driving.

The pursuit continued through Johnson County, where other agencies assisted. The pursuit ended near Interstate 435, where the vehicle went north, McKinley said.

Lawrence police asked that the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department aid in finding the vehicle and driver, as the vehicle was registered in Kansas City, Mo., McKinley said.

As of Monday night the suspect has not been apprehended, according to Sgt. Ted Bordman.
