25 years ago: City, county to meet on highway projects

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 18, 1990:

  • Lawrence city commissioners were hoping to meet soon with county commissioners to formulate a plan for construction of the south Lawrence trafficway and the eastern parkway. The two proposed highways were major components in a loop of planned roadways designed to decrease traffic congestion in Lawrence. Two factors had led to this week’s city commission discussion: an announcement about three weeks earlier of a $27.7 million award to the city and county for assistance in constructing the circumferential loop; and a Kansas Supreme Court decision that cleared the way for a public vote on the issuance of $4 million in bonds by the city and county for its share of the trafficway cost.
  • The Lawrence Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees today approved a $15,400 study of the hospital’s ventilation system that would lead to a renovation project. The study was to evaluate what needed to be done to improve the hospital’s air system, which caused “one room ice cold while somebody else is sweltering,” according to Trustee Chair Marnie Argersinger.
