Young steps down as LHS girls soccer coach

After three seasons at the helm of Lawrence High’s girls soccer program, Justin Young has decided to resign from his head-coaching duties.

Young posted a record of 11-39-1 over his three-year stint with the Lions, including a 4-13 season this spring.

“It was the right time to step away so that I could make sure I had the time I needed for myself,” Young said. “That way I could spend the time with my family as well.”

Young came to Lawrence High from Pembroke Hill High School in Kansas City, Missouri. He remained an assistant on the Raiders’ boys soccer team in the fall while coaching the LHS girls in the spring. While Young is excited to spend more time with his wife and son, he is thankful for the opportunity he had to coach the Lions.

“I think the girls have made a lot of improvements over the three years,” Young said.

LHS athletic director Bill DeWitt said Young played a big role in bringing stability to the program after there had been turnover on the coaching staff in the prior four years.

DeWitt has not started the interview process yet, but said he hopes to have a new coach in place by the time school starts.

“We haven’t really started interviews or anything, just kind of having conversations here and there with the community of Lawrence and take our time to make sure we find a good fit for the girls,” DeWitt said. “Since they’re in the spring, obviously we do have a little extra time. I don’t like that we don’t necessarily have soccer-specific workouts or conditioning, but with all the other things going on, those kids have opportunities to stay in shape.”
